Dice football rules: play football with two dice
Updated 6 November 2026
You can play a football (soccer) match with two ordinary six-sided dice. Each side rolls once, and the roll is its goals: 1 or 2 is no goal, 3 or 4 is one goal, 5 is two goals, 6 is three goals. These are the simple-roll rules from Footroll 90', free to play anywhere.
What do you need?
Two ordinary dice, something to write on and a friend, or play both sides yourself.
How do you play a match?
Each side rolls one die and reads its goals from the table. The higher score wins, and the same score is a draw.
| Final roll | Goals |
|---|---|
| 1 or 2 | 0 |
| 3 or 4 | 1 |
| 5 | 2 |
| 6 | 3 |
| 7 or more | 4 |
How does home advantage work?
Add +1 to the home side's roll. A 6 then counts as 7, which scores four goals.
How often does each side win?
With no home advantage each side wins 36.1% of the time and 27.8% of matches are draws, with 1.17 goals per side on average. With +1 at home, the home side wins 52.8%, draws 22.2% and loses 25.0%.
| Match-up | Win | Draw | Loss |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two ordinary dice | 36.1% | 27.8% | 36.1% |
| Home side with +1 | 52.8% | 22.2% | 25.0% |
How do you add tactics?
Before rolling, both players secretly show a call, like rock, paper, scissors: Attack beats Possession, Possession beats Defend, Defend beats Attack. The winner adds +1 to their roll.
What happens to a draw in a cup?
Extra time: one roll each, and the higher roll scores 1. If it is still level, penalties: 5 kicks each, a roll of 3 to 6 scores, then sudden death.
How do you run a tournament?
Write 16 team names and draw pairs. Play each tie over two legs, home and away, add the scores, and play the final as one match with no home advantage. For a league, give 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw.

Want it on your phone?
Footroll 90' is the app version, and it plays differently: three rolls a match (or one, in simple roll), every club with its own die, and +1 at home only for a club you give the Home Fortress. You can also roll real dice and type them in. It runs the draw and the tables, with cups, leagues and Career.
